The ten minutes a day that fix SPaG before May

The SATs SPaG paper lands in May of Year 6. Fifty questions, 45 minutes, every rule from the Year 5 and 6 curriculum fair game. Most parents try past papers, revision books and a worried tutor. They help a bit. They also lose the room after the third Saturday in a row.

This pack does it a different way. You paste a prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and the AI runs a personalised SPaG session with your child for ten minutes. It teaches, quizzes, marks, spots the rule they got wrong, names the misconception, and tells you which TMKEd worksheet will close the gap on paper.

You stay in the room. The AI does the heavy lifting. Your child gets a different practice session every day until the test.

Here’s one of the 50 prompts inside

This is the full SATs SPaG mock test prompt, exactly as it appears in the pack. Copy it. Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Hand the screen to your child.

Prompt 17 of 50 — SATs SPaG mock test (25 questions)

Run a full Year 6 SATs SPaG mock test for [Mia].
Twenty-five questions covering grammar, punctuation,
spelling and vocabulary in the real SATs paper format
(multiple choice, short answer, identify, rewrite, choose).

Tell [Mia] this is a real-pace test. One question at a time.
Wait for her answer between every question.

At the end:
  - Give the score out of 25.
  - Say where that sits against the typical expected standard
(14 or above for this half-paper, 27 or above on the full SATs).
  - List the five questions she got wrong, with the rule each one tested.
  - Pick the single weakest rule and write it on the last line as:
      Gap: <one short phrase>

What to expect: 25 SATs-format questions, scored out of 25, with the five misses called out by rule and the weakest sub-skill named on the last line.

Easier: drop to fifteen questions. Harder: after the test, redo the five wrong questions immediately.

Replace [Mia] with your child’s name. Every prompt in the pack uses the same placeholder.

What’s in the full pack

50 prompts, written for the Year 6 English programme of study and the SATs SPaG paper. Each prompt is tagged by type so you grab the right one in seconds.

Teach

6 prompts. The AI introduces a tricky grammar or punctuation rule with a simple example and a memory hook. For the first time your child meets a hard rule.

Practise

10 prompts. Calm, untimed, low-stakes repetition. The AI corrects gently and builds the habit. The pack’s daily workhorse.

Test

6 prompts. Scored, in the real SATs paper format. Includes a full 25-question mock test and a personalised retest on previous gaps.

Apply

6 prompts. Rewrite, proofread and redraft tasks set in stories, letters and reports. SPaG embedded in real writing, not bare drills.

Diagnose

4 prompts. The AI works out exactly why your child is getting a rule wrong, in three to five short diagnostic questions.

Coach

4 prompts. Encouragement, growth mindset, pre-SATs pep talks. Honest, never fake-positive.

Stretch

4 prompts. Above-year-band challenges. Dashes for parenthesis, colons before lists, hyphens in compound modifiers, Year 7 preview.

Scaffold

4 prompts. Micro-step support. The AI walks through one rule per turn with worked examples. Good for tough days and SEND learners.

Explain back

3 prompts. Your child teaches the AI. The AI asks clever follow-up questions that expose any gap in their mental model.

Briefer

3 prompts. For you, the parent. The AI explains the rule to you, including the three misconceptions to listen for and what to say when your child says “I’m rubbish at English”.

How it works

  1. Open the PDF. Skim the curriculum map and pick a prompt that matches the rule you want to drill today.
  2. Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Paste the starter message from the pack once (it’s on page 3). The AI now knows it is a UK Year 6 SPaG tutor.
  3. Paste your chosen prompt. Replace the placeholder name. Hand the screen to your child.
  4. Read the Gap: line at the end. Then flip to the worksheet recommendations to reinforce the rule on paper.

Total parent setup time per session: ~90 seconds. The session itself runs 8 to 12 minutes. Aim for one prompt a day, six days a week, from January through to the SATs in May.

What you’ll see in your child after two months

  • SATs-paper confidence. The real format stops feeling alien because your child has met it twenty times before sitting it.
  • The danger rules stop slipping. Possessive apostrophes on plurals, semicolons, the subjunctive — the three rules that cost most Year 6 children marks — move from “no idea” to “automatic”.
  • Confidence in what they don’t know yet. The Gap: line teaches your child to name the rule that’s slowing them down, instead of saying “I’m bad at English”.
  • Better writing, not just better SPaG. Because the Apply prompts rehearse rules inside real sentences, your child starts using semicolons and modal verbs in the writing paper too.

Every session ends with a worksheet recommendation

Every prompt in the pack ends with a Gap: line where the AI names the weakest rule from that session. The pack then maps each gap to the right printable TMKEd worksheet for follow-up practice off the screen.

If the gap was… Print this worksheet Why it helps
“Possessive apostrophes” or “contractions” Using apostrophes — revision contractions and possessives mixed in one drill
“Commas” or “fronted adverbials” How and when to use commas every comma rule on the SATs paper
“Homophones” or “their/there/they’re” Find the homophones — story homophones embedded in a real story, not word pairs
“Word classes” or “clauses” Clauses and phrases word-class and clause spotting in worked examples
“Verb endings” or “tense” Verb endings: -ed and -ing tense and spelling rule combined in one drill

Common questions

Which AI does this work on?

Every prompt is tested on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. The free tier of each works fine for these sessions. You don’t need a paid plan, though paid plans cope better if you run several prompts in a row.

My child doesn’t have an AI account. Can they still use this?

Yes. You stay logged in to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini on your own account. You paste the prompt. You hand the screen to your child. The session runs in your conversation, on your account.

Is this safe for children?

Every prompt is written so the AI never asks for the child’s surname, school, address or any personal data. The starter message locks the AI into Year 6 SATs SPaG and blocks off-topic drift. You sit in the room while it runs.

How does it differ from your existing worksheets?

The worksheets give your child fixed practice on a fixed page. This pack gives your child unlimited adaptive practice on whichever rule they’re weakest on today. The two work best together: AI for diagnosis and pace, worksheets for paper-based reinforcement once the gap is named.

When should we start using it?

Ideally from January of Year 6, ten minutes a day, six days a week. The SATs sit in May, so that gives you four months of daily revision before the test.
