Why does Year 5 set the pace for Year 6?

Year 5 is the runway. Children meet most of the maths and English content the Year 6 SATs and the 11 plus test, then build fluency through the second half of the year. Children who finish Year 5 confident with fractions, decimals, longer writing and reading inference walk into Year 6 with the foundation already in place.

When does Year 5 prep get serious in 2027?

January 2027 is the point most Year 5 teachers shift gear. Half the curriculum content is now in place and the focus turns to applying it across longer pieces of writing and multi-step maths. The Easter break is a natural place to consolidate before the summer term.

What should I be doing with my Year 5 child at home?

Fifteen minutes a day across English and maths is plenty. Mix arithmetic fluency, fractions and decimals, reading inference and at least one longer writing task a week. Our Year 5 packs match the curriculum content and give children stretch beyond the basics.

Frequently asked questions

Is Year 5 too early to think about SATs?

No. Most schools cover the bulk of the SATs content during Year 5 then revise through Year 6. A confident Year 5 child needs much less revision in Year 6.

What should my Year 5 child be able to do by Easter?

Fluent four operations with whole numbers and decimals, confident fractions including conversions, longer writing with clear paragraphs, and reading inference questions. Schools cover this through the spring term.

How much daily practice is right for Year 5?

Fifteen to twenty minutes is plenty. Mix subjects across the week rather than doing one big subject session.

Should we start 11 plus prep in Year 5?

Yes, if your child is sitting it. Verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning are not taught at school, so Year 5 is the right time to introduce them alongside the regular maths and English curriculum.
