KS1 phonics worksheet that teaches Year 1 and Year 2 children that the long o sound can be spelt three ways: ow, oa and o-e.

Children read a mixed list of long o words, circle them in different colours depending on which spelling makes the long o sound, then sort them into a three-column table headed ow, oa and o-e. Words include low, joke, coat, throat, coast, rose, blow, stone, elbow, soak, hole, toast, grow, road, rope, window, goat, boat, yellow, slow, nose and hope, covering the three patterns with a wide range of high-frequency examples. To close, children pick one word from each column and write a sentence for it, linking spelling to meaning.
