KS1 spelling worksheet that helps Year 1 and Year 2 children turn root words into nouns by adding the suffix ment or ness.

A short rule reminds children that suffixes come at the end of a word and create a new meaning. Children then add ment to nine root words including enjoy, refresh (worked example), equip, move, treat and disappoint, writing each new word on a clipboard outline. Next they add ness to nine root words such as sad, kind, nasty, tidy and quiet, with happiness given as the worked example. A reminder note flags the y to i spelling rule, so happy becomes happiness and tidy becomes tidiness. To close, children pick some of the new words and use them in a sentence.
