KS2 spelling worksheet that helps Year 5 and Year 6 children work out the meaning of unfamiliar words by spotting the prefix.

A short rule introduces the four prefixes and their meanings: inter (between), mini (smaller or less important), fore (before or near the front) and trans (across, through or change). In task one, children add the correct prefix to eight root words including beast (worked as minibeast), skirt, ground, head, com, net, bus and bode. They then think of more words using each prefix. In task two, they use the meaning of trans to work out the definitions of transplant, transatlantic, transmit and transparent, then check their answers in a dictionary.
