KS2 spelling worksheet that helps Year 5 and Year 6 children spot the silent or barely-heard vowels in common words.
A short rule explains that some words have vowels that are hard to hear when spoken but must still be written when the word is spelt. Worked examples introduce chocolate, gardener and diamond. In task one, children underline the unstressed vowel in nine words including vegetables, valuable, temperature, cupboard, business, camera, captain, mystery and every. In task two, they rewrite nine mis-spelt words by putting the missing unstressed vowel back in (intrest, factry, diffrent, peple, brekfast, memrable, genral, boundry and diffrence). A closing task asks them to think of more words with unstressed vowels.
